Helping Others: ADR- Neo Yokio

This trimester I was approached by classmate Cody to help contribute some ADR towards his groups main project. It is a sound replacement of a Netflix show called Neo Yokio. The plot on IMDb reads as; 'Mourning the death of a recent relationship, an elegant and fashionable demon hunter struggles to stay afloat in the elite society of Neo Yokio'. (Koenig et al., 2018)

I must admit, I had never heard of this animation before. It is a trip! But none the less, I was intrigued by the groups plan and decided to help out! My character was ' Arcangelo Corelli'. I had about 10 lines of dialogue throughout the script.

So what is ADR or Automated Dialogue replacement? It is basically re-recording a part/segment of a scene in a studio, off set. The original actor will watch the scene on a screen, then trying to reproduce or improve the quality of the intended sound/speech.

Sometimes on set limitations can keep an actor from delivering their lines to the most desired effect. ADR can put the actor in a more relaxed and controlled environment, therefore allowing them to concentrate purely on the required delivery.

Now for this project in particular, the group was recreating the entire episode of the show: Foley, ADR, scoring... the lot!

I found it difficult to walk in to the studio and just freestyle my deliveries. Having never seen the show before, I didn't really have much of a clue on how I was supposed to sound. Doing some more research into the role would have allowed for a better performance. The only day I was available that particular week, was the day I found out about the project and the day the group had scheduled for some recording. So a bit more time rehearsing would have been ideal, but with the recordings we got, I think the group was happy with how it turned out!!
