New week and a new group member. Our boy Cody Howie has come into our group, as his partner deferred trimesters. Although myself and Peter had already almost completed both the Project Plan and Pre-Production Plan for this first project, Cody still came in and evaluated what was done and offered fresh creative input. In particular he helped beef up the Target Demographic for the project significantly. Whilst originally it was going to be just the one guitarist auditioning for the role of lead and rhythm guitar, organised by myself, Cody had one of his friends learn the chords to this song and sent through a video showcasing his acoustic skills. We now have to guitarists to decide to record with. This will be decided as a group when Ryan King, the original musician, sends through his audition piece. We are perfectly on time with our schedule to record in week four, as outlined in the PPP.
This week was also the first basic 'beat making' lecture we've had since beginning at SAE. I must admit I have been a little unsettled as to why we hadn't covered this prior to this point in time and 3 weeks from the due date to the first project. None the less the session, with facilitator Ash Hansen, was a productive one.
In class we were shown how to draw Midi into Logic (again, like Ableton, the first time I've seen this DAW open in my life). I really like Logic and the way it is set out. First we drew in a kick with the pencil tool, then a snare, then a hi hat and so on. Filling in the gaps is important, especially when developing a Hip Hop track, where are 4 bar loop is used for verses. We also learned that it is important to break up every second bar segment by either adding or removing sounds, which give the project flow. We then added a bass line and background synth. Having these DAW's at home to practice more would be a great help, but cash flow is a little difficult right now and I do not have the means to buy such things. Hopefully I have remedied this constraint by mid Tri, with the purchase of a new mini studio!!
