Week 1... Where the fuck do I Start?

So the first week of school in Tri 3 has been pretty eye opening/daunting for me. In AUD210, we were given the task of creating two projects from scratch. Before moving to Brisbane from Cairns to do this course, I had NO musical knowledge in the slightest, apart from a pure love of Hip Hop. Two trimesters in and I now have a basic knowledge of signal flow and how to record into Pro Tools. Along with setting up a studio for recording with miking techniques and also basic mixing skills. I really have come a long way. Upon hearing the news that project one was due at the end of week 6... I shit my pants just a little bit. I came to this school to learn how to produce music from scratch and up until now, have not been taught how to do so. I have officially put my learning cap on backwards and ready to crush this project.

We were allowed to choose our own groups for this project which was an easy choice for me. My best mate PJ, who is also from Cairns, shares my passion for music and Hip Hop...we have a fantastic rapport. It is our intention after this course to produce music for artists as a duo. I will have absolutely no reservations about communicating ideas no matter how trivial they may be. We will feed off each other during this project and the most powerful tool we have apart from our combined audio skill set is unified direction; vital in any artistic environment.

Whilst we impatiently wait for week two of school to get into the nitty gritty of music production and composition from our lecturers, we have already begun to watch YouTube videos on how to make Hip Hop tracks from scratch. Gaining insight from our favorite established producers on their methods is a fantastic starting point and has given us a multitude of ideas for our project.

By the end of this trimester I would like to have at least 5 tracks underway, 2 of which will be completed as per assessment requirements. A bonus for me would be to record a rapper over the top of our beats, but as I am a novice and just getting started with actual production, the complete instrumentals are the bare minimum. So far our project plan is completed, guitar recording artist locked in ready to record at our discretion. After Week 2 of classes at SAE are finished in the coming days, I am excited at the thought of production on these 2 tracks being fully underway.
